"My kid is one year. He can turn pages, and look at a book without being told. He makes some funny sounds whenever he sees an animal picture." This comment by Peggy is just one of many KidsLibs Trust has collected from parents engaged in our pioneering early-literacy program for families. As we continue to expand Little Hands, Big Steps, we are gathering responses from parents and gaurdians to see how the program is working in their homes. (We launched LHBS in 2009, to address the lack of early literacy experiences among preschoolers in Kenya. The program puts a rotating selection of appropriate picture books into the hands of parents and guardians.) Parents are asked to fill in questionnaires about how often they used the books with their children and what kind of response they see in their youngsters. We are enormously encouraged by their comments! Read on to hear more! |

Gacharag'eini, October 2010:"The books are so interesting, especially when using the books together with my child. My child was so funny and nice. Thanks for the project..." (Timothy's Mum) "Continue bringing more interesting books, because as we go on reading with our children they are getting wiser than before." (Leah Irene's Dad) "The books are so helpful to my child because she has started to know how to turn pages and I am very happy with this." (Cecilia's Mum) "I enjoyed sharing books with my child because I saw that he is enjoying them and he is very serious with the books." (Lawrence's Mum) Kawangware, May and July 2010:"He is very much interested in books, and now he is talking about going to school...and is always asking everyone in the house to teach him how to read." (Michael's Mum) "Martin is beginning to be sharp in what he hears and sees, and asking many questions." (Martin's Mum) "It has been very enjoyable sharing books. Tim can comfortably open the pages alone and even demands them almost all the time. When he wakes up he leaves the bedroom with a book; it is very interesting and very good." (Tim's Mum) "It is so challenging. My five-year-old daughter is able to read stories to the younger one. I'm also getting interested in books; before I couldn't even read a newspaper. I thought I was wasting time." (Timothy's Mum) "Her interest for books keeps increasing by the day. She is learning new words, ie names of things she gets to see in the books. This week she learned the word crocodile and giraffe..." (Sifa's Mum) "Marie now knows the time we go through the books, ie in the morning before she goes to the daycare. She wakes up and asks for the books. This shows she has started enjoying the process of learning." (Marie's Mum) "The books are an eye-opener to him because he sees things he did not know about, eg a boat, animals. He also sees things he knows up close, eg an aeroplane, motorbikes, racing cars. Also, to me, he is learning the process to turn to know things that are around him. (Martin's Mum) |
