The UKenya library opened at Bethlehem Community Centre in July 2004 in the Soweto area of Kayole slum in Nairobi. It was built by the British High Commission under their UKenya project of 2003-04, and was opened by her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne of the UK. The Centre is run and administered by Bethlehem Community Centre. The library is about 5 times the size of the other libraries, well ventilated, and flooded with natural light. The book stock was obtained by KidsLibs through local donations from schools, institutions and individuals. A later donation of some children's information books came from a larger donation of books from the UK, assisted by the British High Commission, DHL (UK and Kenya) and Toyota East Africa. Four computers were also donated by the British High Commission in 2005. KLT helped in the design of the building, trained four staff members, and provided all the initial stock. UKenya library is sadly no longer a member of the KidsLibs Trust family, since 2007. |
